Keller LEO 1 digital pressure peak gauge
Bestech Australia has introduced LEO 1 — the microprocessor-controlled digital pressure peak gauge from Keller. The device is able to detect pressure peak under short durations (~0.2 ms) and is suitable for measuring burst pressure of PET bottles in the food and beverage industry.
The LEO 1 offers a user-friendly interface with access to the entire range of functions. The digital display automatically updates twice every second, showing the measured value and the maximum or minimum value attained. The user can also choose from a choice of five different measurement units and neutralise the stored extreme value at the start of recording. It is available with an IP 65 housing and an optional protective cover for outdoor operations.
The device has dual operational modes; normal or continuous. Under normal operation, the device switches off automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity to extend battery life when continuous operation is not required. Under continuous operation, it is capable of operating 1400 h continuously in manometer mode and up to 180 h in peak value mode. In addition, LEO 1 has a unique zero tare feature, which allows the user to set to zero at any given pressure. This gives the actual value as pressure deviation from the zero tare, which is a useful feature in practice.
Key features include: operating temperature 0 to 50°C, measurement speed 5 kHz, pressure range -1 to 3 bar up to 0 to 1000 bar and ATEX approved for use in hazardous environments.

Turck CIP hybrid safety I/O module
Turck has announced the addition of the CIP hybrid safety I/O module to its range of fieldbus technology products.
The hybrid safety concept combines both safety I/O and general-purpose I/O in a single, rugged, on-machine, remote I/O device. The CIP Safety (TBIP) module expands the existing hybrid safety range, which already includes an option for PROFIsafe over Profinet.
Both IP67 hybrid modules can be adapted to the actual signal requirements of an installation through the use of configurable I/O points and by leveraging the flexibility of IO-Link. On the safety side, the hybrid modules offer two safety inputs for connecting safety sensors, such as light curtains or emergency stop buttons. Two additional safety channels can be used as either inputs or outputs. The general-purpose (non-safety-related) side includes four configurable discrete I/Os capable of switching up to 2 A when used as outputs. Two IO-Link master ports are also available, which offer an additional 32 points of configurable discrete I/O when used with Turck IO-Link hubs.
The devices can be used as remote safety I/O or even operated as a stand-alone safety controller for local safe I/O, which allows the implementation of safety functions without the need for a safety PLC while still providing safety diagnostics and general-purpose I/O data to a higher level non-safety PLC.
The IP65/IP67/IP69K degrees of protection allow use in demanding environments. Decentralised plants and modular machine concepts can be implemented without the need for additional control cabinets.

Sterling Systems & Controls bulk bag unloading and weighing system
Sterling Systems & Controls has announced its line of bulk bag unloading systems. These customised unloading systems can include bulk bag discharging, material weighing and batch dispensing, along with the controls required for automatic operation.
The comprehensive system for premixed food ingredients incorporates the mechanical structure which houses and supports the bag discharge, material weighing, dispensing (flexible screw conveyor) and control panel components.
Mechanical components are provided to unload the bulk bag, weigh the desired amount of material as set for a batch by the operator, and then dispense the batch of material into a container for production use. The company provides the VFD panel and equipment along with a system control panel. The system was custom-designed for efficient operation to meet the needs of the user’s production system.
The system is easy for the operator to use. After hanging a full bulk bag in place within the upper part of the support structure, and routing the bag spout through the iris valve and into the bag clamp, users open the bag spout to start the flow of the material into the bulk bag unloader. They then turn on the main power to the VFD and control panels and disengage the emergency stop. With control set for auto, users can set the target weight, fast cut-off and slow cut-off set points, as well as the slow fill speed. Users press the start batch push-button to begin the automated process of bulk bag discharge, material weighing and dispensing.

$250 million meat processing plant now under construction
Work has now officially commenced on the construction of the 45,000 m3 purpose-built Hilton Meat Processing and Distribution Facility in Brisbane. The facility will join the Asahi Beverages in LOGOS' 25-hectare Heathwood Logistics Estate. Asahi’s facility in the estate was completed in November 2017.
The combined investment from LOGOS and Hilton into the Heathwood Logistics Estate facility will be about $250 million, with Hilton investing significantly in automation and robotics technology to make it one of the most advanced processing facilities in the world.
Hansen Yuncken and TM Insight have been appointed builder and project manager respectively for the development, with works scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
Hilton has committed to an initial 15-year lease term on the facility and will invest up to $115 million for plant and equipment for the warehouse. Hilton anticipates making its first deliveries to Woolworths stores in January 2020.
The Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan identified food and agribusiness as a key growth sector for the city, and this project demonstrates the city’s ability to attract significant commercial investment and will create 500 new jobs with the potential to generate $850 million to the city’s economy.

Filling and dosing and Industry 4.0
FERA (Forschungs- und Entwicklungsverein für Robotik- und Automationslösungen e.V.) is a Germany-based research and development association for robotics and automation solutions. The aim of the association is to integrate innovations into existing plants by modular automation solutions.
ViscoTec has recently joined companies including GEA, Turck, Mettler-Toledo, Lenze, CBS-System and SES in membership of the association where they hope to play pioneering roles in bringing Industry 4.0 to the food and beverage industry.
ViscoTec will bring its expertise in the field of dosing and filling technology to the association. With the proven endless piston principle on which ViscoTec’s technology is based, even complicated applications with highly viscous, solids-laden and shear-sensitive materials can be implemented as part of a complete system.
Another advantage of the FERA membership for ViscoTec is the cooperation with research institutions and scientific institutes. This aspect is an important approach to generate improvements and innovative processes in the food sector around dosing and filling in combination with robotics and automation.
ViscoTec has been awarded an International FoodTec silver medal for its Hygienic Dispenser. The dispenser is based on progressive cavity technology and focuses on the highest hygienic and cleaning requirements. The Hygienic Dispenser enables the high-precision and gentle dosing and filling of very small quantities of liquids or highly viscous pastes in the food industry. Automated solutions with the dispenser can be realised with robots or other systems. With the small and compact design of these kinds of progressive cavity pumps, chocolate or sugar coatings can be applied to baked goods, for example.

UPM Raflatac RP48 AT acrylic adhesive
UPM Raflatac has expanded its range of adhesives for food labelling with the RP48 AT (all-temperature) acrylic adhesive for the European market.
Food packaging that will be labelled and stored in chilled or moist conditions, usually at 10°C or colder, often presents challenges for brand owners and packers. The RP48 AT is a suitable alternative to hot melt adhesives which are typically used to label foods stored in these conditions, but can suffer from limited clarity and convertibility.
The acrylic adhesive is suitable for a wide variety of temperatures, particularly chilled conditions, ensuring labels on food packaging remain firmly in place and retain their shelf appeal. Furthermore, it offers good clarity when used with clear film faces and is said to improve the stability and efficiency of the converting and dispensing processes.
The product can be paired with UPM Raflatac’s PP White FTC 60 or PP Clear FTC 50 film face materials.
