The appeal of Japanese drinks to consumers in the UK and North America

Japanese drinks such as matcha and sake are being bought to âWesternâ countries such as the UK and North American countries. Japanese sake is mostly drunk in restaurants the UK, although an event in Kensington, London stressed that it can be more versatile. Meanwhile, while it is notoriously difficult to separate the caffeine from matcha tea, that is what the company Domatcha achieved in 2016. As the drink increases in popularity in North America, it is still the only company who sells decaffeinated matcha there.

Research by financial advisory firm Oghma Partners reveals an uptick in mergers and acquisitions in the UK food and beverage sector in 2023âs second tertial (period of four months) being the highest since 2019. But there were fewer large deals, indicating uncertainty about whether the UK will enter a recession has influenced investor sentiment.

England looks to change ‘alcohol-free’ definition

England currently considers an âalcohol-freeâ drink as one containing less than 0.05% ABV â differing from a number of other countries that use 0.5% ABV as the definition. A public consultation is now seeking views on whether to raise the threshold for 'alcohol free' to 0.5% ABV.
