One-step solution can treat wastewater and produce a spadable cake

Klarion Cleaning and Sanitising System

The Klarion Cleaning and Sanitising System is the latest ready-to-use, cost-effective cleaning solution from Spraying Systems.

The system uses electro-chemical activation (ECA) technology to produce a powerful cleaner and sanitiser using just high-purity salt, water and electricity. The compact system is installed in the facility and produces solutions on-demand in ready-to-use concentrations, eliminating the need to store excess amounts of cleaning liquid.

The system, suitable for use in bakeries, hatcheries, dairies, as well as food and beverages processing facilities, is cost-effective and improves the health and safety of workers as it is fragrance-free, non-irritating and does not use harmful toxics.

The Klarion sanitiser is as effective as twice the concentration of bleach — 200 ppm of sanitiser does the work of 400 ppm of bleach, according to the company. The system is also better for the environment than traditional cleaning chemicals, as it is drain and disposal safe.

The maintenance of the system is simple — just a quick daily check of cleaner and sanitiser pH levels and the salt level in the brine tank. What’s more, there is no capital expenditure; simply pay based on the volume produced and used.

For more information, visit www.klarion.com.

Vemag Flexible Fresh Meat Line

Vemag’s flexible fresh meat line provides maximum flexibility in production, and instead of four lines previously required, there is now only one, which has reduced the cost as well as reducing space requirements to a minimum.

The fresh meat line consists of three sections. The vacuum filler with separation grinder as well as the loading system are fixed in position. Attachments have the same length and are interchangeable. They are suitable to produce burgers, Adana Köfte (Turkish ground lamb meatballs) minced meat, cevapcici, fresh grilling sausages, meatballs and many other specialties. The loading system switches to the stored packaging type fully automatically depending on the specialty being produced. On request, the burgers can be stacked, overlapped or arranged next to one another in the trays.

The interchangeable attachments include: the Forming Machine FM250 — the products from it are characterised by their high-quality texture and bite; the Minced Meat Portioner MMP223 for producing minced meat from beef, pork or poultry; the Automatic Meatball Loader AML273 produces round or elongated-shaped convenience products fully automatically and loads these into trays; the Flexible Sausage Line FSL210 offers flexible and accurate length portioning, linking and separating of sausages in natural and collagen casings.

Features of the meat line include: flexible use; more efficient production processes; suitable hygiene characteristics; may be used for all product groups; one filler for all applications; minimal space requirement; short set-up times; maximum utilisation of production time; minimal capital outlay; and short response times during production.

Omni Pallet Wrappers and Stretch Wrap

Stretch film was previously only available in 20 to 25 micron thickness with low stretch yield and strength. Omni has developed thinner, stronger and longer stretch films so users can wrap more pallets using less film.

The Omni Pallet Wrappers and Omni Stretch Wrap have been engineered together to minimise the required amount of stretch film to wrap a pallet while maintaining optimum load containment.

The pallet wrapper’s power pre-stretch technology can increase the yield of stretch film to 400%, the company claims. This means a 2000 m roll of stretch film can be increased to over 8000 m in length. This is equivalent to 6 rolls of conventional stretch film.

Fibre King Compact Modular Palletiser

The Compact Modular Palletiser (CMP) from Fibre King is a semiautomatic palletiser developed for low- to mid-speed palletising applications. It features a small footprint (3.0 x 1.9 m) making it suitable for facilities with space limitations. The modular nature of the design allows it be purchased in semiautomatic trim but can be easily upgraded to fully automatic when required. There are two options over the standard machine to make the CMP fully automatic.

Option one is a dual-level infeed and outfeed conveyor. Pallets are loaded onto the low-level infeed conveyor, cycled through to the palletising station, then exit on the high-level outfeed conveyor. This option is suitable for higher speed applications to minimise the pallet changeover time.

Option two is a fully automatic pallet handling solution with automatic pallet dispenser and integrated pallet conveyors. This option is suitable for systems which require an integrated automatic stretch wrapper.

The palletiser uses a pick-and-place vacuum gripper controlled by a multiaxis servo system, and this allows precision placement of cases for a neat and uniform finished pallet.

OMS AVR900 automatic rotating ring wrapping machine

OMS’s AVR900 is an automatic rotating ring wrapping machine suitable for all applications where high production rates are required, especially in the beverage sector. It can be easily inserted into packaging lines.

The rotating ring is designed without sliding electrical contacts. This is said to offer reduced maintenance, electrical consumption, overheating and risks of electric shock, consequently increasing the overall safety of the machine.

The model can be equipped with one or two prestretched reels of film and allows the wrapping cycle to be started and stopped at any palletised load height. Rotation takes place by means of a high-strength belt whose speed is adjustable using the operator panel.

At the end of the cycle the film is not heat-sealed (thus avoiding emission of harmful fumes); rather, it is put through a system where the queue of film is positioned under the previous wrap.

The prestretching carriage provides a stretching ratio of film up to 300%, without the use of additional motor or electrical contacts. This is said to result in more supportive packaging, load stability, reduced film consumption and less maintenance.

The wrapping machine can be equipped with a top-sheet device which protects the wrap from pallet dust and water.

There is also an accessory for companies wishing to put their brand on the packaged product; this option is integrated into a special reel holder unit where the roll of advertising band is positioned. The advertising band can be applied at any point of the packaging using a special ring vertical reading system, programmable according to the required height.

Britain urges takeaways to stop serving salad

MAGNATTACK RE80 MAG-RAM Separator

The RE80 MAG-RAM Separator is an automatic self-cleaning grate magnet that provides foreign metal fragment control and helps reduce risks to final product security in food processing lines.

Foreign metal fragments such as tramp metal, work hardened stainless steel and stone, and fine dust-like metal shavings can have devastating effects if they contaminate the final product. Food recalls, brand reputation damage, consumer health risks and financial loss are common consequences of metal contamination.

The MAG-RAM has developed over the years to become an essential safeguard against metal contamination. It is suitable for a variety of dry food applications, including dairy, coffee, grain, flour, meat rendering, pet food, cereals, powder and other similar ingredients.

The automatic cleaning operation of the magnet Rams has a number of advantages for food processing companies. It can eliminate risks of injury involved in handling or lifting manual-clean grate magnets; eliminate the potential for human ingress and bacterial contamination during manual cleaning; save time as it can be cleaned before, during or after production runs, meaning no production downtime and no operator cleaning schedules; continuous extraction means that dangerous metal contaminants are safely removed from the product flow and easily collected for analysis; the design allows for maximum product stream coverage and optimum separation efficiency; and it features HACCP Internationally certified RE80 +11,000 gauss magnetics.

The magnet is commonly installed in bulk intake areas, prior to metal detectors, prior to critical equipment, during the mid-process and at bulk out-loading locations.

Country of origin labelling for fast food outlets

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud MP has written to fast food outlets inviting them to discuss voluntarily displaying country of origin information to tell consumers more about where their food comes from.

This is strongly supported by the horticulture peak industry body, AUSVEG.

From 1 July it will be mandatory for all food products sold in retail stores to include country of origin information. However, some food products, including food sold for immediate consumption at fast food outlets and cafes, are exempt.

Given access to the information and reasonable pricing it is known that consumers will choose locally grown food in preference to imported. However, if the country of origin information isn’t available consumers can’t express this preference and local producers miss out.

“The inconsistent, two-tiered approach to the new labelling is problematic for consumers, but if the fast food industry can get on board and agree to voluntarily display these labels on their food products, it would be a decisive affirmation of the right of Australian consumers to make more informed decisions about the food they buy,” said AUSVEG CEO James Whiteside.

“AUSVEG has been a vocal advocate for clearer country of origin labelling and we hope that the fast food industry, and other industries which will be exempt from mandatory labelling, adopt the labelling so that consumers are able to make more informed purchasing decisions.”

What'll this do to the gluten-free market?

‘Gluten free’ is a very popular dietary choice at the moment. This has been great for the genuinely gluten intolerant coeliac disease sufferers as their choice of foods in supermarkets and restaurants has expanded dramatically.

Now the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Clinical Trials Centre is starting a clinical trial of a new vaccine that aims to switch off the immune response to gluten. This will mean that, if the trial is successful, coeliacs will be able to consume gluten without suffering any adverse effects.

This really is a breakthrough for those who suffer from coeliac disease.

But what about the whole ‘gluten free’ industry? Will those electing to follow a gluten-free regime continue if it is established that the whole problem can be abolished with a vaccine? Interesting times.

Interested in the clinical trial?

Coeliac disease is a serious chronic medical condition in which the ingestion of gluten, even in small amounts, leads to an immune response that causes damage to the small intestine.

Sufferers struggle with various gastrointestinal symptoms and, if untreated, face potentially serious complications. Currently, the only way to manage the disease is by the strict avoidance of gluten in the diet.

USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said the investigational vaccine would be given to trial participants as an injection twice a week for seven weeks.

He said the trial would be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr James Daveson at the Clinical Trial Centre on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs.

Dr Daveson said a gluten-free diet was exceptionally demanding for patients, expensive and difficult to maintain as gluten was used extensively in modern food production.

“There is a real unmet need for therapies other than the gluten-free diet for some people with coeliac disease,” he said. “This is a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”

Dr Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance in coeliac disease sufferers.

Adults between the ages of 18 and 70 can take part in this trial if they have medically diagnosed coeliac disease and have been following a strict gluten-free diet for 12 months or more.

Those who meet the criteria and are enrolled in the study will be compensated for their time. Patients interested in participating can go to www.joinourtrials.com or phone (07) 5456 3797.

SICK HIPERFACE DSL digital interface

SICK’s HIPERFACE DSL is a digital protocol for feedback systems in servo drive technology. The digital interface meets the requirements for the condition-oriented maintenance of machines in the Industry 4.0 environment.

Only one interface is required on the speed controller for all applications, as one type of signal cable is sufficient for the speed controller and the feedback system.

The fully digital interface only requires one additional cable and one additional connector on both the motor and drive. Less space is required for energy chains, and cable carriers can be made smaller as a result. Less room is also needed in the control cabinet for cables and cable glands.

It complies with the RS485 standard and enables data transfer between drive and motor in servo drive systems via two wires which are directly integrated into the motor cable of up to 100 m in length. Electric drives featuring motor feedback systems and an integrated HIPERFACE DSL interface have a distinctive outward appearance with just one male device connector.

Hybrid cables that combine both servo and encoder elements are becoming popular, as both the power and data is transmitted via a shared cable. This is also the case for signals coming from other sensors that are integrated into the digital motor feedback protocol. Special processes and the application of pulse transformers ensure that the encoder signal is decoupled from the faults in the motor power cable.

It supports the functionality of the electronic type label for automatic drive configuration. Motor specifications, serial numbers, part numbers and other data are stored here and used to adjust the drive to the motor parameters automatically and when servicing is required.

SICK CLV6 series laser barcode scanners

SICK’s CLV6 series laser barcode scanners are suitable for use in food production processes where hygiene is crucial, including wet areas. Their tough, stainless steel housings have an IP69K rating and can withstand harsh conditions.

The stainless steel housings are resistant to chemicals and corrosion, as well as being fully leakproof. The design includes a low level of surface roughness; smooth, rounded edges; and special housing and fastener shapes, meaning no residues can form on the outside of the scanners.

An additional double sheath protects the cable entry points and plugs. Even sudden reductions in temperature do not affect the scanners.

The CLV61x, CLV63x and CLV65x product families are fitted with heaters and the CLV69x models have a heated front screen. The devices can operate without problems at average temperatures of -25°C. When a scanner is exposed to constantly changing temperatures, the front screen heater prevents the reading window from misting up.

Their reading performance makes the barcode scanners with integrated heaters suitable for use in frozen food production processes. They have a good depth of field, which is further increased in the CLV65x and CLV69x model ranges by a real-time autofocus function.

Because of the scanners’ wide aperture angle, one device can cover the majority of conveyor belt width. Their reading properties and a fast reading rate help to ensure that the data is safely captured, even when the print quality of the barcodes is poor, the codes are damaged or films or other reflective surfaces have been applied over the top of them. Their high scanning frequencies of up to 1200 Hz allow for fast processor speeds.

SICK DOSIC ultrasonic sensor

The DOSIC ultrasonic sensor from SICK operates according to the concept of time-of-flight difference and provides an alternative to Coriolis mass flowmeters. The sensor can detect a wide range of challenging liquids and matter for beverage and food production, irrespective of their properties.

The absence of moving parts in the sensor eliminates potential contamination risks in the demanding hygienic environments of the food industry. Also, the sensor has a straight, seal-free and self-emptying measuring tube made of high-quality stainless steel (316L with Ra ≤0.8). The stainless steel housing also provides the necessary ruggedness and resistance. The sensor therefore has EHEDG certification and demonstrates FDA compliance, since there is no contact between the sensor and the flowing matter, and the flow volume is determined in a non-contact manner.

Aggressive cleaning agents in CIP and SIP operations are not a problem either. The sensor can easily withstand temperatures up to 143°C in SIP processes for up to 1 h. The rugged design ensures a long service life and reduces the need for maintenance.

The DOSIC is available in two sizes (DN15 and DN25) and can be used in the most confined spaces. Two configurable digital inputs and outputs, and up to two analog outputs and an IO-Link interface, ensure that the system monitors and implements effectively.

It is not necessary to set specific parameters before the measuring process. If the medium is changed, the sensor automatically adjusts its parameters accordingly.

Jet Technologies FS 7000 Tronic filling and sealing machine

The Jet Technologies FS 7000 Tronic is a food and beverage filling and sealing machine equipped with an automatic turntable. It is suitable for medium and high productions, as the machine can run three cups per cycle. The machine is designed to package liquid and doughy products such as yoghurt, cheese, butter, jam, sauces and soups.

The innovative design means the machine is compact and easy to access due to the transparent doors, which can be opened from all sides. This makes maintenance and cleaning operations easy and fast.

It is primarily constructed of stainless steel, which makes it suited to work in aggressive settings. A simple and quick changeover helps to reduce production downtime. On request it is possible to program the machine to dose three products with different density/viscosity, all at the same time.

The colour touch screen allows operators to set and control all functions quickly. The main working stations are mechanically driven. The Tronic dosing is electronically controlled, which offers high precision in filling.

A wide range of options are available to meet the user’s needs, including a clean-in-place filling system, a laminar flow cap, a snap-on lid device, UV lamps, sterilisation by peroxide and more.

Mitsubishi PREMIA PBP16-20N2 series power pallet movers

Manual pallet jacks can make physical demands on operators in confined areas, particularly when heavy loads have to be pulled or pushed using muscle power alone. This often results in high rates of back-related injuries.

An effective way to reduce back injuries is to minimise or stop the use of manual hand pallet jacks when moving heavy loads. If moving loads greater than 500 kg, Mitsubishi’s battery-powered version can be considered.

The Mitsubishi PREMIA PBP16-20N2 series European-built power pallet movers have been developed to perform in challenging environments and to offer a comprehensive solution to safe horizontal movement of pallets.

The pallet mover’s maximum lifting height of 135 mm allows for easy handling on steep ramps and loading docks, even with damaged pallets. A sealed chassis offers protection against dirt, dust and other particles to reduce wear, while an oil-filled sealed transmission is designed to ensure reliable and quiet operation. The trucks also have a high-efficiency electronic system that features waterproof components for maximum reliability.

Electric power pallet movers are said to be safer and more cost effective in the long run. With the right equipment specification and operator training, the electric power pallet movers reduce the risk of operator injury, reduce fatigue, improve operator performance and increase the efficiency of the operation.

MULTIVAC slicer line

MULTIVAC has released a slicer line for the automated slicing and packing of products such as cheese, ham and other sliced products.

The line consists of an SL 800 slicer, an R 245 thermoforming packaging machine, a horizontal loader and a compact L 330 conveyor belt labeller. An H 130 handling module is used to load the packs into boxes.

The SL 800 slicer is equipped with fully automatic central loading and offers a high slicing speed of up to 800 slices/min. The product infeed is carried out in a highly controlled and compression-free process using servo-driven product infeed units. The portioning system on the machine can perform virtually any portioning task — from precise placement of slices in shingled portions and straight or offset stacks, through to the shingling of wafer-thin cut product, and right up to the folding of individual slices. The servo-driven portioning system, which can be raised and lowered, enables stacks up to 80 mm high to be produced, as well as tall shingled portions and large bulk packs of product.

The Horizontal Loader is designed to ensure that a wide range of sliced portions can be transferred efficiently from the slicer to the cavities of the thermoformed packs.

An L 330 conveyor belt labeller is used for labelling the packs of sliced products. This model is designed in the IP69K protection class and is designed to meet the highest hygiene requirements in food processing companies.

The coordinated line components can be controlled easily and with good process reliability via the open IPC control and user-friendly HMI 2.0 of the packaging machine.
